High-visibility clothing: when is it necessary?

Everything you need to know about high-visibility workwear

May 17, 2019

There are special work situations, conditions, and environments for which specific clothing is necessary-safety at work depends on it!

Situations where, for example, operations take place near moving vehicles, cranes or other motorized equipment, as well as work situations with poor visibility conditions.

In all these cases, it is important for the worker to be identifiable without possibility of error and to be able to make himself visible in any condition and position: from any angle both at night and during the day; from the front, from the side and even from the back, a position from which the operator cannot see his surroundings.

To meet the needs of the category of workers who operate in this particular work situation, a specific range/assortment of clothing was born that guarantees safety and protection by making the worker immediately recognizable.

Worker protection is an unavoidable obligation, andaccident-prevention clothing is an indispensable means of worker protection.

High-visibility workwear is subject to a specific regulation/standard, ISO EN 20471:2017, which establishes and regulates its essential safety requirements.

Let's see together what the regulation/standard provides.

The latest update of the 2017 UNI EN 471 standard introduced new requirements for the certification of high-visibility workwear and specifically:

1) RETRO-REFLECTIVE AND FLUORESCENT AREAS.
The performance of visibility-enhancing materials to be used in hazard-related high-visibility garments has been specified photometrically, as well as the requirements for the minimum areas and arrangement of retroreflective, fluorescent and/or combined material.

The larger the area covered, the higher the safety rating. Certification classes range from 1 to 3, where the latter is the one with the largest area of fluorescent/reflective material and, therefore, the highest level of safety rating.
This parameter applies to all clothing, but provisions may vary among user countries and may be subject to local regulations.

2) SAFETY RATING
As mentioned earlier, there are 3 safety ratings:

  • Class 3 - Maximum safety rating.

The garments must provide daytime and nighttime, all-around visibility and must be designed for shape recognition (profile of the individual), encircle the torso and be equipped with quality retro-reflective and fluorescent material in sufficient quantity for both daytime and nighttime visibility. In addition, related risk factors must be taken into account. These work clothes are suitable for all those who work in the vicinity of vehicles traveling at a speed greater than 60 km/h.

  • Class 2 - Medium level of protection

High-visibility Class 2workwear has the same basic requirements as Class 3 workwear, but is suitable for all those who are subject to a lower level of related risk factor. It is the correct safety rating for all operators who work passively on the road, in the vicinity of vehicles circulating at an average speed of 60 km/h or less.

  • Class 1 - Minimum level of protection

For clothing related to this safety rating, there are the basic requirements already mentioned for the other classes, namely: guarantee of daytime and nighttime visibility from all sides and design to allow identification of the individual in his or her overall form (profile) both by day and night. This type of workwear is suitable for all those who perform their duties on the road in the vicinity of vehicles circulating at an average speed of 30 km/h or less.

3) MARKING AND INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE MANUFACTURER
All High Visibility clothing shall:

  • Meet the marking requirements defined in ISO 13688 and bear the graphic symbol ISO 7000-2419: High Visibility Garment.

  • Report washing instructions and state the minimum and a maximum number of cleaning cycles.

Wearing the right safety clothing is critical and should be a priority, even when only a small part of the workday is spent in environments where visibility is important.

Fluorescent fabrics ensure perceptibility needed in daylight, while reflective bands provide great visibility at night.

As we have seen, ISO EN 20471 is divided into three classes, based on the risk area in which the worker operates, where class 3 represents the most luminescent garment. However, wearing two class 2 garments together-for example, jacket and trousers-is equivalent to class 3 clothing.

The garments in the U-POWER collection are made to comply with Class 2 for retro-reflective materials.
